Happy Holidays to the EGTTR viewers

Happy Holidays everyone! Remember, you're not a Scrooge if you dislike the commercialization of Christmas. Scrooge disliked everything good, he hated mankind in general...I think the tag of Scrooge is a bit harsh when you don't find yourself excited about shopping for Christmas gifts. I think using the description of a heartless old man who wished for nothing more than money is a bit "over-the-top" when it comes to choosing not to participate in obnoxious, mindless holiday traditions. Christmas is about friends and family...always has been, hopefully always will be.

Cheers...see you in the new year with a new DVD deal!

INDIE PIX and EGTTR

Every Good Thing to Rust available for DVD Download at IndixPix.com

EVERY GOOD THING to RUST // a film by john w. yost

Well it's a official, I have a page on indipix.net which means we are one step away from having a download on their site. If you notice the indiepix banner now graces the site and soon it will be on the download page urging you to click it if you want to watch the film on the couch instead of in front of the computer. This new partnership with indiepix is great and I hope long lasting. I know that in some way I'm doing my own DIY distribution on the site, but if feels great to have people believe in the film enough to want to distribute it on their end as well. Here's also to the Saratoga Film Forum for believing in the project.

Cheers Jason and Derek!

Screenings a big hit...same with downloads

Last night saw the last screening for charity in the area at the Saratoga Film Forum. Thanks to the Forum and thanks to Derek for believing in the project. As indie film crowds go it was a great turnout, lots of great feedback and a very involved crowd. Mike Potts and his crew showed up in full support of Mike, who I'm casting in the next one as the rugged, Lake George, drug addicted, male prostitute. A natural progression from the role of "man protecting his home with rifle". Thanks again Mike...you did a great job! :-) We raised just around 300 dollars total for HATAS and got at least 70 new people to see the film. Now I realize something like this will not bring in crowds of a 100 (see previous blog promise...I knew I had nothing to worry about.) However we just hit around 200 or so downloads of the film which means the website is working and the idea fits the project. Don't know if I'm going to follow the same model as the next one, but you can bet there will be charity screenings and part of the sale proceeds to charity as well. I think we should help when we can...and I can.:-)

Again thanks to all who came out to see the film and thank you for your generous donations to HATAS...it will help! Please pass on the HATAS organization to friends...volunteer time, food, what you can, they are working hard to help those in need. As for the film if you liked it...pass it along to friends/link us...If you didn't like it email me right away...I want to know why for the next one.:-)

Cheers
John

PS for the person who sent me a comment for the blog about x-mas and Christianity...I don't think you got what I was trying to say. I find those things you mentioned in your comment to be distractions. The world would be a better place if we stopped following them blindly.

Saratoga Flm Forum!

Last screening of EVERY GOOD THING to RUST for charity this Saturday. Come and help John believe in Christmas miracles. PLUS, If 100 people show up I'll run down Broadway George Bailey style and wish everything a merry x-mas. That's worth the 5 dollar admission right there.

Cheers

December 15th, 8PM Saratoga Film Forum

You've got a blog, now use it

It's funny how other peoples blogs make you think of how you aren't writing in yours. Jon Katz of Bedlam Farm reminded me recently that a blog is not just simply to get out information about a screening, or book release. A blog is there for writing out your ideas and thoughts so that they don't stay in your head to long, warping your sense of the world that simply doesn't exist. Point taken, I will write this one...and then an informative posting.

X-mas and sentimentality almost go hand in hand. There is something about "believing" in the joy and wonder of Christmas that I can't get behind. I am a scrooge, I am a negative person sometimes. I feel time is wasted on believing and hoping things will turnout; that Christmas and Christan miracles can happen and should. I believe in hard work, sacrifice, and perhaps a small amount of chaos. The time spent pining over the magic of Christmas, or being sentimental about the way things used to be, could be time better spend actively pursuing goals, and righting wrongs. My wife reminded me that we take this time once a year to reflect and let ourselves believe in a fat, white (western looking) man who is "magic" simply to give ourselves something to look forward to. I however don't think we do this just once a year...I think we all do this everyday. Everyone from the Christians who use everyday little miracles to justify a god, right down to the average consumer who finds life's completion in the small-to-large everyday purchases. We distract ourselves on so many levels from what's important, in so many ways. I myself am guilty of this...I have a problem with alcohol. A substance that completely turns off the thinking and allows me to just be, to be in the moment, to revel in the spirit that is the world around me. When I'm sober, the world washes right up on me and I'm observing things to an obscene amount...allowing myself to be caught up in everything, but when I'm drinking, it allows the world to wash over me and past me. It allows it to be a big place with people that do harm to one another and people who time and time again choose the easy way out instead of putting forth that extra, yet extremely small amount of effort to change themselves and the world around them. I'm not saying Christmas and sentimentality is unnecessary...without it we would all go nuts. My argument...we power off a little too much and perhaps with the wrong remote.

The next film is shaping up as well, turning into a real nice piece. Hopefully a film that will explore the relationship of one family to the outside world.Hoping to also tackle the question of everyday isolation...We're so connected now and yet I've never before felt this alienated. Not just physical alienation, but alienation in priorities, interests; we are a country of extremes and miscommunication now...this does not cultivate community. I am looking for an answer to this. (and I don't think the answer is ONLINE communities, or shopping buddies, or bar crawls.)I heard my neighbor this morning trying desperately to start his car at some insanely early hour...later I realized I didn't even try to get up and see if he needed a hand. That bothers me. I once would have at least checked. Later I remembered what my mother had said about my little brother. that he often gets close to people that are not the kind of people you want as friends. People that try to push you around, take things from you, put you down for their own gain. My brother is the kind of person after all his years on the planet still trusts people; trusts the general good in people. I told my mom he needed a bit of me in him...and I needed a bit of him in me.

UAG and CDFI screenings

UAG, 9PM December 7th...after First Friday.
CDFI, 8PM December 8th...come one come all.

12.03.2007

First screening went off without a hitch.

The first of our charity screenings went great. A small intimate crowd and 100 dollars to start off the fund-raising for HATAS. After, we had a great discussion on the films themes of isolation. Every time I watch the film I learn a bit more on how to handle the next film. I'm also quite drawn to isolation; the next film will be a conversation about isolation, and I can no longer use the eventual "end of the world" as a devise for it. It's just too easy. The next film will talk about isolation in everyday society, as well as three generation of men learning to find a place in this world. Should be uplifting Raeanne...I promise.

Chronogram article and the start of screenings

Chronogram has just published an article about the film in their Capital Region version.

http://www.chronogram.com/issue/2007/12/Arts+%26+Culture/Steal-This-Movie
(the link above also take you there.)

I have to say I'm quite impressed with the magazine and I think they do a way better job at arts coverage than any of the local papers...free or not. I salute their efforts and thank them a thousand times for the great article. Thanks to Molly and Tim.

Last night marked the kick off of the charity screenings with a preview on the corner of Broadway and third in Troy, NY. Troy Night Out was a blast and I think the preview really helped get the word out. I'd show you a picture of the set-up, but I was busy shooting a new thing for PBS with my producer Brandon Bethmann. Brandon has started ZINE; an arts and cultural show that runs normally 2-3 minutes. It plays in between the programing over at WMHT and is shaping up to be great. It was also great to see some old friends that I haven't seen in years, Thanks for the beer Ira and Maura...look forward to more.

Come check out the film tonight at Crooked Lake House at 7PM. I'll be there, what else do you need.

Cheers

DVD might be in the works

Things have been going well here at EGTTR. I recently finalized the new title of the next film..."The Brave and the Kind" and started story outlines. Thanks to all the great feedback from friends and mentors that are helping to shape the film.

In distribution news, Indipix.net and I are working on perhaps having the film available for download through their website. What's great about Indiepix is that they give you free software that helps you download the film straight to a DVD right at home. It's faster and easier to get my film onto DVD for living room viewing. PLUS, If all works out, Randall, Holland, and I will be doing the commentary track to be included with the new menu and a few extras. They are a great site that represents some really wonderful indie films. Stay tuned to this blog and sign up for the newsletter on the home page for updates! :-)

Finally in screening news. All is a go and the first "preview" will be showing at Troy Night Out. Check out the store front at 260 Broadway, Troy, NY. I'll be around interviewing for Zine and handing out info/collecting for our charity HATAS. The first REAL screening will be at The Crooked Lake House this Saturday at 7PM. Stop in for some food from their excellent menu and watch the film on a plasma screen...very high tech. :-) Thanks to Paul Vincent and Paul Franchini for having us and allowing us to shoot there in the first place.

Crooked Lake House

Here are the screening dates:

November 30th - storefront preview of screening schedule and film at TROY NIGHT OUT.
December 1st - screening at the Crooked Lake House in Averill Park 7PM

Iceland

Sorry for the gap in blogs this month. Just went to Iceland via my brother's house in Purchase and it's been a long 6 days. First off...I love my brother to death, but his party made me realize a very sad thing. Most people don't want to change the world, they'd rather consume it, live in it, and say nothing against it...as long as their quality of life is not threatened. Don't get me wrong, most of Neil's friends are awesome, loving people, who I love hanging out with, BUT, the swarm of rowdy, drunk, assholes that showed up to his party made it hard for me to focus...causing panic. This, coupled with two misplaced shots of REALLY good Tequila, and I'm a bumbling mess trying to find a mental foothold in a world I once thought I had figured out. However, it has helped me realize a few things and for that it was completely worth it. I had a blast Neil and would do it again. :-) Thanks to you and all your friends...the cool ones.;-)

Then it was on to Iceland. What can I say about Iceland...I love pretty much everything about this country and I only saw the very tip. A friendly country with warm people, smart views on family, education, and energy. Not a skyscraper in sight and the temperate climate means it never gets really below 20 degrees, even though it's in the Arctic Circle. Rae and I sampled the local food and rented a car one day for a trip around the "Golden Circle"

My only wish is that I had more money and a longer stay. The 10:30 AM sunrise with 5 hours of sunlight a day took a bit getting used to. However, the only other place I've ever felt more at home at was Ireland. There is something incredibly sad about always feeling like a visitor or alien in your own country. I'm getting quite sick of the feeling and looking to remedy that as soon as possible.

New Film With Book Planned...Thanks Jon Katz

So after a photo/computer lesson at Bedlam Farm. Jon has convinced me of not just making one book, but two books. There is a book publisher down in Troy that helps you self publish and I think that's the best way to go with my upcoming photo "tri-series". Raeanne is designing a brand for all three ideas to fall under; we would then make a book of the three series and use it to seek representation in galleries across the country. As for the next film, shooting has already begun with some back story/interview stuff starring my grandfather. The book to accompany this film would talk about the process of going from your first feature to your second feature. Jon felt that there is a process and idea that I'm working on and haven't quite defined for myself..why else would I be making another film with similar subject matter. He's right and I think it will make a nice piece to bridge the two. Can anyone say dual disc DVD with book supplement...I can. :-)

cheers
John

Here is an image of series I'm starting to research...it's called 2050 and involves in- camera masking of miniatures...more to come.

HATAS at Crossgates November 17th-18th

If you're in the Albany area this weekend, stop by the Crossgates Mall, and after shopping pop on over to the HATAS Gingerbread House Extravaganza. HATAS is our charity for the film screenings and this event is sure to please. It's even a bigger plus if you have children, who will most certainly want the sugar.:-)

UI Gala confirmed...We have a charity!

SCREENING UPDATE! Talked With Kevin Craig West of Upstate Independents and it looks like we'll have some clips in the show. I will be there collecting for charity...what charity you say.

HATAS
Homeless and Travelers Aid Society

I couldn't think of a better charity/film pairing. It's an organization that helps Capital District people survive. Be it homelessness, mental illness, or drug abuse. AND it's right here in the Capital Region....so the money doesn't go to some far off cause. Stay tuned for more info and hopefully more dates (if the demand is there. :-)

Cheers

John gets a weekend off...Toonces happy?

So in this hectic life I often find myself with not one spare moment that hasn't been planned. Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely wonderful to have my life filled with great moments with awesome friends and family. After hearing of a friends loss this past Wed (hang in there buddy) I spend most of my Friday contemplating what's important. I've often said life is becoming transparent....and it is. BUT, you need to always take time to count your blessings and reaffirm your priorities; Rae and I are doing just that this weekend. I ask if Toonces is happy simply because she likes attention, but not this much, she can sense we're looking for meaning and knows she can only supply some of it. A look that says "get a life" is all I need from her.

You Tube...no substitute for a good ole' fashion screening

So because of the special YouTube "10min rule" I've been posting up pieces on myspace and "my foxsearchlight" a few groups at a time. The final 4 pieces are up, but remember...you can always download the entire film on the website for free...instead of watching crappy YouTube vids. The social networks have been great as instruments for getting the word out about the film, however, their impact on society and human interaction are pretty horrible. Plus I'm SO sick of getting friend requests from the same girl with no clothes on and getting my account hacked so that all my friends think I'm selling Macy's or Avon. At least Facebook only sends your info to the CIA. ;-) This 10 min rule reaffirms my notion that people are getting less and less interested in well made, long format, internet content. We are one monkey hair away from watching the next season of "Ow my balls" on internet repeat. (Idiocracy joke) Does a film like mine even have a place in a word where internet content is 2 min snipits of TV shows, people's idiotic video responses, and fan trailers? Have we already gone too far and given way too many people the power to express themselves to everyone in the world instantly. Are we spreading intelligence, or are we spreading mediocrity. Your thoughts?

In other exciting news, a week of screenings in the Albany area is in the works for the first week of December. Playing at exciting venues and events, it promises to be a blast. PLUS, the suggested 2-5 dollar donation is also being given away to charity. The charity is almost finalized, but it will be a charity that helps local people survive the winter. If you've seen the film you know that's a good choice in charity. If you haven't seen the film, well then you just need to download yourself a copy. (or email me...I'll send you one if you're in dire straights.)

here are some of the dates so far:

Nov 30th - storefront preview of screening schedule and film at TROY NIGHT OUT.
December 1st - screening at the Crooked Lake House in Averill Park...part of the film was shot here.
December 5th - UPSTATE INDEPENDENTS GALA - clips/entire film...STILL PENDING
December 7th - First Friday screening in Albany at UAG
December 8th - Albany Screening at CDFI
December 11th - Crandall Library - still pending as well

If you can think of any other place to show, or of a killer charity...send it my way. I leave you with a promo image of the film.

DVD's at Troy Night Out

Hi all, "Motion Portrait Film" is in a show called PERSONA, and the opening reception is at Troy Night Out tomorrow 5PM-9PM. The Arts Center of the Capital Region is where it's going down on River street and I'll be there handing out free copies of EVERY GOOD THING TO RUST my first feature film. So if you see me out and about, and want a free copy of the film without waiting hours for the download...hunt me down. :-)

OR

go here for a free download:
EVERY GOOD THING to RUST // a film by john w. yost

Cheers!
John

digg it...link it...stumble upon it...

EGTTR now has a link button html code you can put into your social network sites and personal blogs. Designed by the talented Raeanne Wright, these link buttons will help us get the word out. We're also on stumble upon and digg it...so digg us. :-) I've become a bit of a stat junkie after seeing the relashionship of press/linking to site visits...very interesting. Saw LOL last night...the film by Joe Swanberg is a must see for those who like mumblecore and technology...or who hate technology and want to watch what it's doing to this generation. I still cannot get over the fact that when you give something away for free in this country...people take it less seriously. From now on...downloads 20 bucks a piece....just kidding.

Cheers
John

PS Just go to the main page www.everygoodthingtorust.com and look for the "link here" in the bottom navigation. It will give you a window that has code to copy...the button looks like this

Picking up speed

So things have been quite busy between emailing out the press release and getting last minute promotional material together for this Friday. On Friday the 26th I have a past film/project in a show at The Arts Center of the Capital Region. The reception will be part of the Troy Night Out event that happens every month. I'll be in and out of the gallery from 5-9 PM and then around town for a bit. Stop by and pick up a free DVD of the film, plus you can take a gander at what other things I do...besides making films...wait...it is a film...

I also had a great weekend. I did a phone interview for Chronogram Magazine. A local arts and cultural zine with great content....I'll be in the December issue so check it out! :-) I was also on Bedlam Farm Saturday night giving Jon Katz his weekly photo lesson. I however was not up early enough to get this shot with him...because according to him I am a slacker and lazy ass. Despite Jon's complaining, it's beautiful in upstate right now

Why are all the stats backwards?

So another week of "pounding the digital pavement" for the film. This DIY promoting is hard but fun. I feel like I'm breaking the rules a bit...and that's always a blast. I looked at the web stats and got discouraged...then I realized they go right to left?! Who does that. Then I got encouraged and saw we are at 100 downloads of the film...in various sizes. VERY EXCITING. It's interesting what happens when you give people things for free. I hope people are not having a hard time taking it seriously...it's free so that it's accessible...not because it's crap...I promise. :-) Going to Bedlam Farm and Hicks orchard this weekend. Going to start work on a new photo series and run an idea by Katz....putting him in my next film.(not really him, just a character that plays him.) It's a story with a depressing ending (shocker) but I hope it's uplifting and puts everyone through the gamut of emotions...why else make films. Work on the film is already in story stages and for the first time I'm thinking past what I know I can do safely...time to break some more rules. Very quietly though. ;-)

EGTTR Avaliable for Download!

Hey everyone, the film is finally available for download on the website. Normally you have to sign up for the newsletter to get to the download page, but here is the link anyway

http://www.everygoodthingtorust.com/download.asp

However it would rock if you signed up...show Raeanne some love for the great website. (www.everygoodthingtorust.com)

Let me know what you think, pass the film around, check the blog, and hopefully there will be some good response. I'm sending it off to festivals, but I have a feeling the best feedback will come from this process.

Apple TV download to come in a few days...it's the really nice quality download...however, it's 2.5GB small. ;-)

Almost there....stay on target!

So between shooting a wedding for a friend this weekend and tickets to see The National in Boston, I have yet to get the compressed files up for download. Not to mention the fact that 8 different versions took 40 hours to compress...even on a brand new MAC PRO. So never fear...the film will be here...Monday. :-) Rae and I will be working until it's done after work Monday and let you know immediately. Thanks for being patient.

Toonces and Friends

This is the tentative title to a new photo series I'm shooting next week. Ever since I got the cat she seems to be in touch with more of what's going on around her than us humans. Constantly curious, she roams all of the places we live with a certain sense that others have lived her before us. The series will be quick and shot with mostly available light. I will probably keep it as an ongoing series, shooting in every new place we go. Mostly it's an excuse to shoot some of my environment and to document the cat that is Toonces.

Cheers
John

PS Film is being finished and compressed....Oct 5th is still the date I'm shooting for.

Premiere a success

So this Saturday was the premiere of EGTTR and it went great. Everyone pulled together to prep the space behind Trampoline Design, and we had a packed house. Here are some of the images Jon Katz took while everyone was engrossed. (Sorry John I stole them from the blog, but I never got a chance to take any...and these are great.)

Here is the mention on Jon's blog

http://blog.bedlamfarm.com/index.cfm/2007/9/30/Every-Good-Thing-To-Rust

And Trampoline talks about it on their website in "The Buzz" section

They said it better than I could ever.

Movie will be out this weekend for download....and I'll finally have more time too add to this blog...I might even get better at writting a blog.

Countdown and a good tramp

So I woke this morning to find it 5 days to the premiere of the film at Trampoline Design and that I spent all weekend partying. It's going to be a long four days of work to finish. But on the plus side Andreas cousin plays a mean guitar.

And speaking of tramps...here is mention of the film on Trampolines newly designed Blog...Bounce. Get "Bounced" and check it out.

my haunted house

So I know most people that know me think I'm nuts when I say my apartment is haunted. In fact I don't know why I even believe it. I'm not religious, or superstitious. I had a feeling that the new place has been the site of many relationship disasters...just a feeling I got from the place. An apartment with a high turn-around rate due to bad break-ups...it's just a feeling I got. It was confirmed by my landlord in a casual conversation which my wife overheard....she said she got goosebumps when my landlord replied to my query. NOW, we find Toonces (our cat pictured to the left.) meowing all the time. She also does this thing where she acts captivated/terrified of something in the room. She then follows that something with her eyes and chances it once it's gone by into a corner, under a door, or down a vent grate. Mind you there is NOTHING there. She also sits at the door to my studio pictured here and cries. I had a dream that I woke to find a shape moving behind that door and Toonces meowing, but much lower and menacing...all while staring at me...not the door. I've also had several dreams where I end up accidentally killing someone...and I've been sick a lot lately. All in all, however, I don't feel threatened here at all. It's a very cozy, comfortable apartment and I don't feel scared at all. I wish I knew what Toonces saw...perhaps she's slightly autistic for a kitty...who knows.

Why I get down

Had a long day yesterday of coming to grips with things I should have come to grips with along time ago. Most people know less that you think they know, and don't be surprised when most people put them selves and their comfort before you, their family, their country, and the world. I watched the BBC wold news after dinner, and even religious leaders now think global warming has some merit.. I'm not religious, but some of the virtus of sacrifice and patience is something even most Christians in this country have no concept of. Anyway. Saw an example of how .5 of a percent change in our economy can change the world...and don't think for a second that wasn't an awe inspiring moment of quiet relief. I bet you there are people out there feeling safer that the worlds economy cannot even function with out us. With so many fingers in so many pies, I'm surprised we have time to educate our children so well. I'm learning to forgive, forget, and expect certain things. I hope it doesn't make me numb to things.

Came across these pictures of Holland from the shoot from his myspace page. They made me realize my job is to make films...if that is a job.

My friend the writer

So I've got this freind who's a writer and he's got a blog like mine. He also has a really sweet website like mine, designed by the same person who designed mine; the lovely Raeanne Wright.

Here's the blog mention of me.

Here's me returning the favor.

Check out www.bedlamfarm.com for all the latest photos Jon's been working on, as well as farm journals that detail farm life in an age old way. Jon has become a friend and mentor in the process of working the kinks out of my film. He thinks more writing is needed...I say he would say that...he's a writer. The next one will have more dialog Jon...I promise.

Mumblecore What!

So I recently sent out a bunch of screeners to people I felt would give constructive, solid feedback. 2 of them came back with a term I am now just learning about...mumblecore. I'm still not quite sure what it means and I encourage anyone and everyone to educate me. Supposedly films such as Hannah Takes the Stairs, Puffy Chair, Four Eyed Monster, and Quiet City (all films I think that are putting the indie back into independent.) are mumblecore, yet no one has been able to effectively explain this term to me. My film was made for next to nothing, with a few people, and all of the dialoge is improvised...is that mumblecore? OR is this just another label like DIY or idie?

Only three weeks till the film is available for download on the website Oct. 5th

The site is live

Here marks the beginning of Every Good Thing to Rust as a film. I've found the whole experience to be a good mix of frustration, joy, and learning. All I hope to get is feedback and ideas for my next one...speaking of the next film; here are the early stages. Cocktail napkins really do make the best notes. Perhaps a film that has more than one laugh it it this time...we'll see.

Interpol almost as cool

So I took a small break last night and went to the Interpol concert here in Albany. the show was awesome and the last song of the encore was PDA. (live below...from reading...no youtube footage from albany I guess)

The Albany crowd was pretty sedated, but the show was great. The Liars was the opening act and I wasn't that impressed. Many found them to be, and I quote, "cunts". I found them to be an energetic offspring of Sonic Youth...to each his own I guess.

Here is my own rock star friend Pete Klinkon recording the soundtrack of the film. I would love to work with bands like Interpol someday when recording future soundtracks...I hope they can get along with Pete though...he's not going anywhere.

This time last year

At this time last year I was deep in pre-production. Having decided to make a film, I had only one month to find locations for the fall shoot (Which took place the same weekend as the premiere will.) Here is me and Dan Swinton (the man with the movie camera...thanks dan!) scouting the location for the end of the film. We got lost a few times, but that helped to cement it's location for me on our return in the spring. Best location...EVER.

GoodBye abstract noise

So after lots of great feedback and some searching...of the soul kind. I've found it necessary to omit the firecracker percussion from the soundtrack at the end of the winter portion of the film. Here is some video of us in the woods getting that audio. A special thanks to Thad for making me realize it...putting it in very truthful, yet helpful terms. And thank you to all who have pre-screened the fine cut, directors direction in it and all.:-)

First Entry

So here is the first entry on the Rust Blog. Not to sure how to do a blog, so it may not be the "normal" way. Here is an image that started the web design and brand to follow. It was made in a matter of minutes and I fell in love with it. My wife Raeanne Wright designed everything, she works at Trampoline Design and is wonderful. Videos and pics to come, as well as covert screenings and hush-hush premieres. We're getting this film out the only way I know how, little by little, and behind the scenes.
